College of Charleston was founded in 1770 and chartered in 1785, making it the oldest institution of higher education in the state of South Carolina and the thirteenth oldest in the United States. The founders of the College, who sought "to encourage and institute youth in the several branches of liberal education," included three signers of the Declaration of Independence and three fathers of the United States Constitution. The Citadel is a place of pride and tradition. A place where the standards are high, the discipline is strong and leaders are born. Charleston Southern University, founded in 1964, is a fully accredited four year independent liberal arts university located near historic Charleston and the beautiful beaches of the South Carolina coastline. Johnson & Wales University is a private, nonprofit institution and is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. With more than 50 faculty members teach at the Charleston Campus. Their certifications are: Certified Culinary Educator, Certified Executive Chef, Certified Food Service Executive, Certified Hotel Administrator, German Certified Master Chef, German Certified Master Pastry Chef. The Medical University of South Carolina has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824. It has expanded from a small private college for the training of physicians to a state university with a medical center and six colleges for the education of a broad range of health professionals, biomedical scientists and other health related personnel. Webster University of the 1990s retains the same pioneering spirit envisioned by its founders in the early 20th century - a spirit of academic innovation which, for 80 years, has not wavered. Trident Technical College, with an enrollment of over 10,000 credit students, is one of the largest two-year technical colleges in South Carolina. The College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees, diplomas and certificates.
